The excitement of the Hungarian Grand Prix was put to rest on Saturday after a horrific accident involving Felipe Massa from the Ferrari team. There was a devastating high speed collision that provided a few scary moments but thankfully Massa is now in stable condition. He had to be airlifted to a hospital after the accident and there was a lot of fear that the situation was much more serious, maybe even fatal. However he was mobile and moving his arms as the helicopter took him away which was good news for F1 fans all over the world.
The accident was caused by an unfortunate turn of events as a spring fell off of Ruben Barichello's car and hit Massa right in the helmet. The hit dazed him and forced him to fly over the curb, across the track, and directly into a circuit wall that was protected by tires. It was a very unfortunate event but turned out to be not nearly as serious as it could have been.
It has been disclosed that Massa will not be racing on Sunday, which really goes without saying, thanks to Principal Stefano Domenicali of the Ferrari team. Immediately after qualifying Barrichello went to the hospital to check on the fellow Brazilian driver and was happy to see that everything seemed to be turning out ok.
The crash itself was very similar to the recent crash involving Heikki Kovalainen during the Spanish GP last year. Kovalainen escaped the incident with nothing more than a concussion even though it looked much more serious. Hopefully the same will come of this incident and F1 fans around the world definitely hope that Massa will be able to return to action soon. The Hungarian Grand Prix should still be an exciting event on Sunday but there is no doubt that the status of Felipe Massa will be in the minds of all the drivers, no matter the outcome.
