Formula 1 racing has taken a devastating hit. Recent comments from F1 boss Bernie Ecclestone have let to backlash in the community, outrage from Jewish community groups and helped to ensure that 8 teams walked away from their peace deal before the 2010 season. Many Formula One fans wondered why teams did not seem interested in signing up with F1, or what their problem was with Ecclestone, that was until he came out and made comments regarding Adolf Hitler. It has now become clear exactly why people are not interested in working with Ecclestone and why so many people are calling for his resignation.
Recently in The Times newspaper, Ecclestone was quote discussing Adolf Hitler and how he respected him for “getting things done”. While he has fought back, apologized and tried to further explain his comments, the damage has been done. Many teams, drivers and employees of F1 have always seen Eccelstone as a dictator and now it is clear to see why. These sorts of comments are not expected to come out of the mouths of people leading and running major companies. In these times people are supposed to know better, it’s as simple as that. There is no room in the world for people who think like that, act like that or try to justify that kind of behaviour. While Ecclestone has apologized, he clearly still does not disagree with his comments, and that is what has so many people up in arms.
The F1 series is in a delicate state with different owners, drivers and teams threatening to start their own breakaway series. The last thing that the series needed was this kind of negative publicity. Many are calling for the resignation of Ecclestone and there really are not many reasons why he shouldn’t. He needs to move on and let someone else try to fix the mess he has created with the Formula One series.
