Felipe Massa In Recovery

Felipe MassaFelipe Massa was taken from the ICU recently and moved into his own room, recovering from the accident at Hungary two weekends ago. His prognosis is good, with no damage that is seen so far. The accident came when a spring bounced up from Rubens Barichello's car during the qualifying rounds. Doctors were worried that the injury, which caused a skull fracture and damage to his left eye, may leave him unable to race, with permanent eye injuries. Ferrari spokesperson Luca Colajanni said that the 28 year old racing champion was speaking normally, and had even managed a few steps, and that everything was headed in the right direction.

While currently in the AEK hospital in Budapest, Massa will be going to a hospital in Paris to continue his recovery. Immediately after the accident, Massa was placed into a medically induced coma, but was brough out of it recently. Sir Stirling Moss said that he thinks Massa needs to get back into the F60as soon as possible to make a metal recovery from the crash at Hungary. Apparently, the brain concussion and skull fractures are secondary compared to what this crash could do to Felipe Massa mentally if he doesn't get back into the cockpit of a race car soon.

Moss knows about serious crashes firsthand. In 1962 he was injured at the Goodwood race, in a Lotus competing for the Glover Trophy. The accident left Moss partially paralyzed and in a coma, which ultimately led to his retirement from racing. Now, in an event that likely brings back memories some forty-five years later, Moss says that it is important for Massa to get back into a race car as soon as he can, even if its not in competition, but just to see how it feels. If Massa's eye injury caused permanent damage it may affect his depth perception, and his ability to race. But only time will give us that answer.
