Team Durango which raced in the GP2 Team Durango Wants To Be 13th Team tier has talked to the FIA about becoming the latest team to line up the grid in 2011 for the Formula One Championship. The FIA can allow one team in, since regulations will allow twenty six cars on the starting line. Durango had to withdraw from GP2 in 2009 because of financial problems, but with new investors, they are now hoping to make it into the Formula One Series, according to Ivone Pinton. The FIA is expected to announce the newest team in July.
Pinton is the boss of the Italian team and he said that the sudden push was due to two new investors who particularly wanted to see the team compete in Formula One. He released a statement on the teams website that said that they had looked for new partners to back their racing activities after all the wrong things that happened last season. He said that the only interest that he could pique with investors was with Formula One racing, saying that if he is able to enter Formula One, two international groups will be backing the team.
Durango competed in both Formula Three and Sportscars as well as being active in GP2. But Pinton thinks that they have a chance to win some races in the top tier of Motorsport Racing. He said that right now this is simply a serious attempt, but that after so many years that the team pushed their drivers towards championships, that it was time to push Durango in the same direction – the what Pinton called the motorsport Pinnacle. We'll all anxiously await the FIA's decision and subsequent announcement in July.
