The very first Formula One Race in Inaugural Korean Grand Prix is apparently a success, especially if you base it upon the number of fans that attended the race – more than 170,000. The three day meet was fraught with concerns that the circuit would not be completed in time, it ended up being a spectacular race. Apparently, the sport has a large fan base in Korea and spectators were glad to be able to attend the event in their own country. KAVO CEO Yung Cho Chung said that they were “delighted” at how successful the race was.
All the action started with the Friday practice sessions, which had around 25,000 fans present as Mark Webber and Lewis Hamilton ended up with the fastest times on Friday, and then Saturday's practice session and qualifying had around 65,000 in attendance with Robert Kubica on top for the third practice session and Sebastian Vettel earn the pole position for his team – Red Bull Racing Renault on Saturday. On Sunday, around 80,000 attended the race as bad weather made for a late start, and Fernado Alonso finally taking the race for Ferrari.
The Formula One Series continues with the Brazilian Grand Prix November 5th through the 7th coming up next, and then onto the final race of the year, the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. However, the KIC will be hosting events year round including regional, international and domestic, making good use of the brand new circuit. The Formula One Championship has confirmed that the Korean Grand Prix will be held once again next year in Yeongam, scheduled to happen October 14th through the 16th, in 2011.
