Racing Career Over For Felipe Massa

Felipe MassaUnfortunately, you need both of your eyes to be in perfect condition for racing, something that may not be possible any longer for Felipe Massa, as he waits in intensive care for possible damage to his eye after a skull fracture may result in serious damage to his left eye. At last check-in, Massa was in a medically induced coma. Doctors said that he has shown some improvement, the emergency surgery that Massa requires may cause long term eye problems in the future.

The twenty-nine year old Ferrari driver from Brazil is one of the most famous names in Formula One racing, having won 11 World Championship titles and making it to the podium no less than twenty eight times since his career in Formula One began in 2002. Massa started his career with Sauber, and drove for them until 2006, where he signed his his current team, Ferarri.

Massa started out with a technical error during the very first race with Ferarri's F60 this year, on January 12th, where the practice session saw him place seventh and tenth, much worse than usual for the Brazilian. Then, the next day's qualifying he did nearly exactly the same, ending up in seventh place, and then promoted to sixth as one of his competitors were disqualified. The race went poorly, based on a technical error in judgment where Massa had to stop three times, because of the tires that had been chosen for the race.

It was just a few months later, in July, when Massa's helmet was struck by a suspension spring during the second round of qualifying at the Hungarian Grand Prix. The spring came from Ruben's Barrichello's car, and caused Massa to crash into a tire wall. This crash resulted in a fractured skull and brain concussion and he had to have surgery on his spine. Only time will tell if this injury will put Massa out of F1 just this season, or permanently end his career in motorsports.
