The Triple Crown of Motorsport is made up of The Indy 500, The 24 Hours of Le Mans and The Monaco Grand Prix, the latter of which happens this Sunday, May 24th. With one of the most prestigious races of the year being ran in Monaco, fans are streaming into the south west European city, to line the streets and see this year's race.

The race is set up on the streets of Monaco, on a narrow course that runs its way through the city, with many turns, dangerous elevation changes and even a tunnel, which makes it one of the more dangerous races to participate in each year, which of course makes it all the more exciting to watch.

The race began in 1929, and the first race was won by William Grover-Williams, driving a car that was created and conceived by the Molsheim, France auto manufacturer, Bugatti, now owned by Volkswagen. It has been won by many drivers over the years, but the two most memorable are Graham Hill, who won five different times in the 60's, and became known as “Mr. Monaco”. Hill also is the only driver to have won all three triple crown events. Another driver that has had great success at the Monaco circuit is Brazilian Ayrton Senna, who has won the race a total of 6 times between 1989 and 1993.

The street circuit in Monaco is fraught with dangerous curves and turns, and would not pass today's safety muster, if it were not for the fact that the Grand Prix is already established and has a long history in Formula One racing. It is one of the only circuits that has stayed the same course over a long period of time, with only the Italian Grand Prix a competitor, held at the Autodromom Nazionale Monza nearly every year for the past 80 or so years.

The circuit is one of the most demanding circuits in racing, with a narrow course and several tight corners and changes in elevation, plus a tunnel that makes it difficult for the drivers to adjust entering the darkened space and then exiting back into the sunlight. Twice, drivers have crashed and ended up with their cars in the harbour, Alberto Ascari in 1985 being one of those, and driver Nelson Piquet said about the track in Monaco that it was like trying to “cycle around your living room” and that a win at Monaco was “worth two anywhere else”.

The practice sessions take place on the Thursday before the race, and the streets are opened up again on Friday to allow traffic through. The Thursday practice sessions are each an hour and a half long, the first from 10:00 to 11:30 and the second taking place in the afternoon from 14:00 to 15:30. All times are in local time.

There is one more last chance practice session on Saturday, just an hour long, between 11:00 and Noon. Later that Saturday afternoon the drivers qualify and determine the starting grid. The qualifying takes place at 14:00. Finally, the race is held on Sunday, also at 14:00.

Last year, Lewis Hamilton driving Mclaren-Mercedes won the Monaco race, becoming the youngest driver to do so and taking the title from Fernando Alonso, of the same team, who had won it for the previous two years, championing 2006 and 2007. All in all, Mclaren has had five wins since the year 2000.

On race day, the drivers will complete a total of 78 laps, with the circuit length 3.340 Kilometers, for a total race length of more than 260 kilometers. There are a total of nineteen wildly challenging turns, some of them sharper than any other race circuit, with the aforementioned tunnel about halfway through the lap.

Monte-Carlo lies on the French Riviera in the corner of Italy and France, and is famous for its casinos and gambling, as well as the yachting and playing of the rich and famous. The Monaco GP isn't the only race that is held in Monaco, but it is certainly the most famous. Constructors Mclaren, Ferrari, William and Renault are all participating in this year's race and Fernando Alonso will be competing as well, hoping to take his title from 2007 back.

Alonso only took 10th in last year's race, while Robert Kubica from BMW-Sauber took runner up to Lewis Hamilton. Felipe Massa of Ferrari was in third place, while Red Bull-Renault's Mark Webber grabbed the fourth place prize. Fifth was taken by Sebastian Vettel.

Hamilton started third on the grid last year, while third place winner Felipe Massa had pole position. Runner-Up Robert Kubica was in fifth place in the starting grid. Fernando Alonso started 7th in grid position, but ended up tenth place when the race was finished, and did not score any points. Hamilton scored 10 points for first, while his runner up got eight.
