The FIM Superbikes World Championship will run the last race of the year for the 2011 season in Portimao, Portugal and it has been a long time coming, since the very first race of the year at Phillip Island, Australia on February 27th. The series went through Europe, the United States, Netherlands, Italy and Germany as well as many other venues. The most recent race on the calendar was the Magny-Cours, France event which was held on October 2nd. Carlos Checa with Ducati took the first race in France, and then went on to win the second one as well.

Carlos Checa is also leading the standings right now, with 467 points. Marco Melandri with Yamaha is in second and has 360 points. Eugene Laverty takes third with Yamaha and has 283 points. Max Biaggi with Aprilia will take the fourth spot and BMW rider Leon Haslam takes fifth with 216. Others in the top ten include Leon Camier, Syvain Guintoli, Ayrton Badovini and Noriyuka Haga. In the Superbikes World Championship this week, the series will race in Imola, Italy at the Enzo and Dino Ferrari, in a race that will happen on Sunday, September 25th. There are just two more races to go after this one and then the Superbikes World Championship will be at an end and the winning driver will be decided. Coming up next, the riders will be in Magny Cours, France, for an event on October 2nd and then on October 16th the series will finish out with the final race of the year, happening in the beautiful city of Portimao, Portugal.

Let's take a look at the current standings as we head into the race just before the penultimate race of the Superbikes. The standings certainly aren't etched in stone, but some of these riders will be tough to catch up to. In first is Carlos Checa on Ducati with 376 points, with Marco Melandri coming in second riding Yamaha. He has 302 points and then in third is Max Biaggi on Aprilia, holding on with 281 points.
